A Glimpse into Hell
TEXT: Luke 16:19-31 KJV
I. The Place Called Hell.
A. God is Light – Hell is dark.
B. God is Good – Hell is bad.
C. God gives Joy – Hell gives sorrow.
D. God gives Rest – Hell gives torment.
E. God offers Hope – Hell has no hope.
F. God offers liberty – Hell has bondage.
G. Gehenna from OT word ge-hinnom, valley of Hinnom (Tophet - Jeremiah 7:31
“And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.” 12 X in NT, every time used by Jesus.
Hades Acts 2:27 “Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.” 10 X in NT, 4 X by Jesus.
Sheol Psalms 86:13 “For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.” many meanings
II. The Person Crying in Hell
A. He is Hapless –
He is abased. vs. 20 Lazarus was laid at his gate to beg, now he is laid in
Gehenna, begging Mark 9:44, 46, 48 their worm dieth not…The worm of remorse.
tormented - vs. 23 – bas’anos - base, basis at the bottom
vs. 24, 25 – ooduna’o – to grieve Luke 2-48 ; Acts 20:38
A. He is Helpless –
He is alone. vs. 23 Sees Lazarus and Abraham afar off. He had daily parties,but now alone. The worm of remembrance.
C. He is Hopeless –
He is abandoned. vs. 26 a great gulf fixed…The worm of removal.
